10. PC renewal / A mystery of data transfer
At the time of PC renewal, it is necessary to transfer the data on the old PC to the new one. This, however, does not work by the way based on an seemingly common-sense idea.
Even if I copy the the whole of the corresponding software and transfer it to the new PC, in most cases, it does not work.
The reason why it is so, or it is so designed, is not clear at all. Probably, this is a matter of self-explanatory for those who engage in the software field.
In any event, it is totally out of the question that the logged data or the likes are not relayed to the new PC. Fortunaely, there are a lot of how-to information on the Web, and it is possible to solve problems, even if the reason behind the peocess is unknow.
In my case, the transfers of Trubo HAMLOG, LoTW and Thunderbird were troublesome. By following the procedures on the Web, I managed to finish the transfers.
It looks like that the basic procedures in common for the three cases are;
1.
To dwonload the latest version of the corresponding sofware to the new PC.
2.
To find out the data preserved file in the old PC, in case of LoTW, the certificate file, and to copy it in an USB memory stick or external HDD.
3.
To transfer the file copied at 2. above to the corresponding file of the corresponding software.
Those things done without understanding their mechanism behind are soon forgotten. And at the time of the next PC renewal, I will have to rely on the Web information Again. A miserable situation.
